Anubhav Crop Show 2023

108 Chilli Varieties. One Field. Zero Guesswork.

About This Edition

2023 โ€” 108 Varieties of Chillies

Anubhav 2023 went to Jamka village in Junagadh district โ€” where farmer Nagbhai Dhandhal opened his land to plant and demonstrate 108 different varieties of Marcha (chilli) side by side in a single field.

Held on 30th December 2023, this was one of the most comprehensive chilli variety demonstrations ever conducted in the region. Farmers could walk the plots and directly compare plant vigour, fruit size, colour, pod set, and field performance across 108 varieties โ€” all under identical growing conditions.

Chilli is one of the most commercially important crops across Saurashtra and South Gujarat โ€” yet variety selection is one of the most common sources of yield and income loss. Most farmers plant 1โ€“2 familiar varieties with no scientific basis for comparison. Nagbhai’s field changed that.

Key Takeaways

What Anubhav 2024
taught Kutch farmers

Not all chilli varieties suit all regions

Top performers at Jamka differed from Kutch trial results โ€” confirming that Gujarat's agro-climatic diversity means regional testing is essential before variety adoption.

Pod size and shape directly determine market grade

The same effort, same input cost โ€” but different variety choices โ€” put farmers in completely different market price brackets. Variety selection is a market decision, not just an agronomic one.

Plant architecture affects total season labour cost

Compact varieties that are easier to harvest can save 15โ€“20% of total harvest labour cost โ€” a significant number when multiplied across multiple pickings per season.

December sowing requires winter-specific variety selection

Varieties selected for Kharif conditions don't necessarily perform the same in December. Anubhav 2023 gave farmers a tested reference list specifically for winter chilli cultivation.

The Trial

What farmers could see on the field

108 chilli varieties, each in its own marked plot, under identical conditions. No advantage for any variety โ€” just real performance visible to every farmer who walked the field.

01

Plant height and branching structure

Different varieties show dramatically different growth habits โ€” compact vs tall, single-stemmed vs heavily branched. This affects harvesting ease and labour cost.

02

Pod size, colour and shape comparison

Long vs short, thick-walled vs thin, deep red vs bright red โ€” variety differences that directly determine market price category and buyer preference.

03

Pod set density โ€” fruits per plant

The number of pods per plant is one of the biggest yield determinants in chilli. Side-by-side comparison made this difference visible at a glance across 108 varieties.
